Where you place your Stratus® Precision Rain Gauge is just as important as the gauge itself. Improper placement is the #1 cause of inaccurate rainfall readings. Follow these CoCoRaHS-approved guidelines to get the most accurate measurements possible.
The official CoCoRaHS rain gauge. NOAA-endorsed, Made in the USA — built for precise, reliable rainfall measurement wherever you place it.

- Away from obstructions: Place the gauge at least twice the distance from any tree, building, or fence as the height of that obstruction (e.g., a 10ft tree = at least 20ft away)
- Level ground: The gauge must be perfectly level for accurate readings
- Avoid splash zones: Keep away from hard surfaces like driveways or patios that cause rain splash-back
- Consistent location: Once placed, keep it in the same spot for consistent long-term data
-
Open sky exposure: The gauge should have a clear view of the sky above — no overhanging branches or roof overhangs
Mounting Height
CoCoRaHS recommends mounting your gauge so the top of the outer cylinder is approximately 2 feet above the ground. This minimizes splash-back while keeping it accessible for daily readings.
Secure Your Gauge Post Without Digging
Need a stable post for your Stratus gauge? Stake It™ No-Dig Ground Anchor lets you secure a post firmly in any ground — no digging, no concrete, no tools required. Perfect for getting your gauge at the right height and keeping it level all season. Made in the USA.
Winter Placement Tips
For snow measurement, keep the gauge in the same location year-round. Use the liquid equivalent method for snow — bring the gauge inside to melt the snow before reading. See our complete winter measurement guide for full CoCoRaHS snow protocols.
Keep Your Measuring Tube Clear
Regular removal of the gauge for reading means the inner measuring tube takes daily handling. If it becomes scratched, cracked, or cloudy, replace it to maintain 0.01" reading accuracy.
Need a replacement measuring tube? Keep your Stratus gauge performing at its best with an official replacement tube — Made in the USA.
